“Mud”, de vuelta al deep south

El deep south (“sur profundo”) volvió al cine. En algunas salas de la ciudad se proyectó Mud (2012), tercera película del director norteamericano Jeff Nichols, oriundo de Little Rock, Arkansas, la cual compitió por la Palm de Oro en el Festival de Cannes.

En su obra, el director ha explorado su tierra (Shotgun Stories, Take Shelter) con una mirada muy peculiar que recuerda el proyecto narrativo de William Faulkner —nacido también en el sur profundo—, el cual penetró en el alma del sur de los Estados Unidos.

Lo primero que se revela mientras la película avanza es el afán del director por contar una historia, de cabo a rabo. Y eso hay que festejarlo. Sin pretensiones, sin una estructura narrativa rebuscada —que muchas veces es sinónimo de fallida—, evitando los diálogos ampulosos o maniqueos, Nichols logra contar una historia de hondura narrativa.

Todo comienza con un suceso digno de llamar la atención: un barco azul varado en un árbol, en medio de una isleta de arena ambarina en medio del río Mississippi. Un par de muchachos —que, sin ser remedos, recuerdan al emblemático Tom Sawyer— deciden apoderarse del barco, y es ahí donde comienza esta aventura, pues la nave está habitada por Mud (Matthew McConaughey), un hombre duro, prófugo por un crimen que cometió a causa de Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), su antigua novia; bella metáfora de la amistad y el amor.

Sin temor a repetir lo que otros cineastas o escritores han dicho, Nichols propone una historia digna de ser filmada. Los personajes tienen alma, y eso aporta mucho a la película. Quizá se deba a que casi todas las personas que aparecen en la pantalla son oriundas de Arkansas, incluyendo a los dos jóvenes actores que interpretan a los muchachos que ayudan a Mud.

Con el uso magistral de la cámara, Adam Stone (director de fotografía) logra que las imágenes de un paisaje ribereño que poco a poco va cambiando, cediendo a los embates de la modernidad, emocionen al espectador. Una fotografía muy bien lograda.

La historia se desarrolla en varias aristas, y eso más que distraer o distanciar al público, aporta datos fundamentales para penetrar en los personajes. Es el caso de la familia de Elis —uno de los muchachos—, la cual está al borde de la destrucción, al igual que su hogar: una casa flotante en el río, que será desmantelada. El trabajo de su padre (pescador), su pasado y su vida, dependen de una decisión que él no puede tomar.

Finalmente, a pesar del sabor amargo que deja la película, pues no hay ningún final feliz (no podría haberlo), el afán de contar la historia emociona, y justo por eso, me parece, se va al cine… Porque emociona.
