La referencia la encontré en Algarabía, esa excelente publicación de literatura ociosa que forja anécdotas en base a los datos más estrambóticos e irrelevantes, lo cual, sin duda, es una virtud en estos tiempos políticos tan aburridos. Este tópico podrá parecer muy gracioso a simple vista, pero no ha de ser tan agradable vivirlo:

Así lo expresa María del Pilar Montes de Oca Sicilia. Sin embargo, la autora refiere que el término ha ido evolucionando a través del tiempo y que el matrimonio bostoniano ya no alude solamente a dos viejecitas viudas o abandonadas que un día empezaron a acompañarse por necesidad:

“Hoy, el término designa a toda unión de dos personas adultas —hermanas, hermanos, madre e hija, madre e hijo, primos, y amigos o amigas— que viven juntas por mucho tiempo, pero no son pareja, y se consideran matrimonio, porque son relaciones muy cercanas en las que cada uno de los miembros tiene asignadas ciertas funciones, pero también comparten la toma de decisiones, los planes diarios y las vicisitudes…”

Personas que saben más de lo que deberían saber sobre aquel otro con quien viven. Acuden a mi mente Lenny y Carl, de Los simpsons (espero que no sean como el mago barbudo de Harry Potter), Mulder y Scully, de Los expedientes secretos X, y Michael Jordan y Scottie Pippen, de los Chicago Bulls. ¿Quién no conoce aquella anécdota (leyenda urbana) en la que Pippen adula el nuevo auto deportivo de su amigo, al tiempo que Jordan responde: “¿te gusta?, te lo regalo”, mientras le extiende las llaves?

Muchos son los personajes que a lo largo de la historia han vivido en matrimonio bostoniano y, aunque sería más bien ocioso señalarlos a todos, no podemos abandonar nuestros intereses investigativos y dejar de preguntarnos ¿qué es lo que lleva a dos individuos a tal situación? Montes de Oca Sicilia afirma:

“Se vive con otra persona, muchas veces, porque hay un proyecto de vida en común, como en el matrimonio institucional, pero también hay otras razones: las muertes de los padres, las desventuras amorosas, el apego al núcleo familiar, el miedo a crecer, la desidia o simplemente la mera coincidencia… También son la comodidad, la negligencia o simplemente el «somos pocos y nos conocemos mucho».”

Es decir, la soledad. De la misma forma, la autora señala que en “los matrimonios bostonianos, como en cualquier otro, suele haber pleitos, hartazgo ante la cotidianeidad, escena del sofá, rituales compartidos, celos y complicidad”.

Esto lo redacto después de que el domingo anterior pasara por el Jardín de las Rosas (en Morelia) y me encontrara a dos conocidos en un café, quienes, ante mis saludos y los de mi amiga F, respondieron apáticamente, lanzándonos sólo una mirada pícara mientras se sonreían uno al otro. Hasta entonces, ni el hecho de que los hubiera visto, en alguna ocasión, ebrios bailando danzón me hizo sospechar de su matrimonio bostoniano. Fueron las palabras de F, quien dijo: “parecen pareja, ¿no?”, las que me hicieron caer en la cuenta de ello. El resto, ya lo han leído arriba en este texto.
